April Fools Day

There's no prank I can pull,no tall story I can tell, that compares to the real world right now. It's very hard not to laugh at the whole Spain veto thing which has been thrown at the Scottish claim for independence in the past and is suddenly applied to Gibraltar. Representatives from the very government which has chosen to ignore the citizens of El Penon in the pursuit of Brexit are suddenly aghast. Gibraltarians mustn't be used as pawns by Spain they say, having completely ignored the wishes of these very citizens as well as  threatening all too happily to use the rights of EU citizens as pawns in the bargaining process. The breathless buffoonery is worthy of today's date and I'm still not sure it isn't a joke.

But the birds have been singing gloriously since before dawn, and that's a pretty reality. Still working to small success, and finding myself better at celebrations over the past week; I love Spring.

This is precisely the sort of tit-for-tat shitiness we feared. I was on that pro-Europe march in London the other weekend and though I share the 'I love EU' sentiments it's the kind of weak slogan that maybe fails to convey what we're fighting for here. I do love the concept of the EU, but that's not because I love Europe. I hate Europe. Europe, including the U.K., is a nasty collection of small heavily armed, warmongering states, which continue to gestate filthy violent racial nationalist ideologies and massively corrupt elites. I love the EU because Europe is a very bad place indeed and we need something to replace it.

I find this a very interesting viewpoint, Ben - not sure I agree with all of it, but still more to understand. What form of EU do you see as the replacement for Europe? Are we talking superstate?

Superstate indeed. A proper one.

Interested to know what you mean by a 'proper' superstate?

There is much,I think, that you and I agree on, but having just come back from Rome, you can imagine that I do not agree that Europe is a bad place. Yes,there is much pain and terror in its story, much stupidity and cruelty, but there is also intense beauty, art, music, humanity,science... It is very much the landscape of the good and evil twins. You are right about the warmongering tribes, but as a child and grandchild to three of them, and fostered by a fourth,I cannot despise those tribes - I can only hope and act for peace among them.

Further from familiar shores, it becomes impossible not to love the places I see, far from the reaches of Europe. But Europe is the reason I can do that... though beyond doubt Botswana fills a place in my heart dearer to me than I could ever imagine.

A proper superstate would be a constitutional democratic federation with a real central bank, like the USA, Canada or India. It's what Austria-Hungary would have become if the allies hadn't preferred to dismember it into racial enclaves.

I love Italy. Who doesn't? I'll be holidaying on Lake Como this summer and going to my Italian friend's wedding reception in the Alps. I can't wait! But do I love Italy as a political entity? God no. It's a basket case. A failed 19th century experiment by the Piedmontese, and I say that as someone who loves Garibaldi too.

As for our 'tribes', they are as fictional as the Italian nation. Political constructs founded on obsolete racial ideas and accidental linguistic groupings. What tribe is my daughter a member of? Have I left my tribe by marrying a non-Anglo-Saxon or has she joined mine? It's the lowest form of politics, constantly pandered to. Enough is enough!

Yes, I agree with this.
