Sleeping through the Night

We went to see [G] yesterday evening. They had moved him to the ICU late in the afternoon. God, so tired of seeing my friends hooked up to machines! But one look at his face softened the shock. He was asleep, the ventilator keeping his airflow easy, and he looked less drawn and more peaceful than I have seen him in years. They will labour to keep him asleep for a few days while they pump him full of antibiotics.

It transpires that he's probably got liver disease though they can't be sure til the tests are completed. Still, they are pretty certain. His body has been fighting it for a long time, so when he got a chest infection last week, it turned into pneumonia fast and sepsis set in.His body has been wracked under relentless pressure, and whether his odd behaviour has been down to Depression/Encephalopathy/both is yet to be ascertained. Clear symptoms of the second have been noted.

But one step at a time; first he must get past the pneumonia. The danger does exist that he won't, but this is being treated as a possibility not a probability, so fingers crossed for him.

And the group has lost that odd vibe. It's become constructive, all about what can be done. Everything seems to be a step in the right direction.
